Getting Grants
Where can we go to beg for money?
Trillium grants are every four months, March, July and November 1st. They have a simplified application process for small capital grants under 15 000$. While it looks like there are a lot of rules and details to go through, we should be able to qualify as an incorporated non-profit. This money probably shouldn't be counted on for operating expenses, but it seems like it could be used for legal and insurance consultations, upgrades to the space (outlets, eyewash stations, accessibility), tools and tables, advertising and to generally make our membership fees go a lot further towards rent.
We should probably apply for a grant in November. While our case gets stronger if we are incorporated and have space already, even if we don't have everything lined up they try to add reasons to a rejection which could help our case next time.
It may take more than one attempt to figure out where we fit in to their funding priorities.
I sent a note to someone who used to write grant proposals for the company I work for and hopefully he'll get back to me quickly with some kind of information. - Ian Service, August 20
